In January 1982 we flew to Istanbul. Turkey was in the grip of martial law and all propaganda was outlawed. It was against the law to promote religion and meetings of more than ten people were forbidden. With some trepidation we talked to people about Christ in shopping malls and found the people hungry for the truth. When the group we were talking to grew to more than ten, armed soldiers brandishing automatic weapons moved us on. A group of young men crossed the Bosporus to visit us in our hotel so that we could explain the Gospel. One man left his shop unattended to follow me, asking me questions about Jesus. We also visited missionaries who were secretly working in Ankara. One of the most awesome nights of my life took place in Turkey when the Lord visited us in our hotel room with a manifestation of His presence which I never knew the like of before or since.
