Give Me This Mountain

John Hibbert

An old man turned eighty stood and watched as the walls of Jericho fell down.  He had been brought up as a slave in Egypt and had spent the last forty years living in the desert.  The fall of Jericho was the beginning of Israel's conquest of the Promised Land, and the realization of Caleb's dream for his people.  Many old men would have been satisfied and content to see this incredible miracle, but he was a man with a personal promise from God and he was determined to see it realized before he died.  The Almighty had promised, forty years before, that Caleb would have Hebron as his inheritance and he wanted it!  In my last devotion I pointed out that it was Peter who showed initiative to walk upon the water.  He wanted to do what Jesus was doing, which is never a bad idea.  Would he ever have walked on the water, if he had not exercised faith and made the suggestion?  I think not!  Would Caleb have ever possessed Hebron if he had not gone to Joshua and said "Give me this mountain?"  I think not!  He held on to his promise and, by faith, required its fulfillment.  Jesus said, "Ask, and you shall receive."  James said, "You have not because you ask not."  The Bible is full of promises to God's people which most Christians never appropriate.

They live and die without seeing them fulfilled.  They discus them,  study them,  pray about them, but they never use their initiative and take God at his Word.  Has God spoken into your life?  Are there unfulfilled promises which are drifting into history?  Rise up and believe!  Age makes no difference to God.  Caleb was 85 years old when he said "Give me this mountain."  He was ready for action, ready to fight for that which God had given him.  It is time for you to rise from your easy chair and launch out.

Start moving this week!  Take a step of faith and watch God work a miracle!
