Please! Don’t Criticise!
John Hibbert
Following the recent election I am dismayed to hear criticism and suspicion regarding Mr Cameron's and Mr Clegg's motives in their unlikely union. I am quite sure that neither of them is perfect and that desire for high office did have a part to play in their decision making, but is it not possible that they both have a sincere desire to provide a stable government for our nation in a time of crisis? Would it not be nice if we all put aside partisanship and united behind them with a common purpose? Why does it seem almost part of our culture to cast aspersions, make unkind innuendoes, and put the worst possible spin on the motives of others? What I find even more deplorable, is the fact that very often the same spirit pervades the universal church. Wonderful servants of Jesus Christ, whose sole purpose is to win lost souls for the Saviour, are subjected to suspicion and critical analysis from self righteous church leaders who wish to guard "their patch" and seem incapable of believing that there are still people in our world who just want to do some good, with no hidden agenda. Many years ago God spoke to me and told me to go to a certain town in Cornwall and preach the Gospel. At great personal cost I went, held a crusade in the town hall and started a church. Three months later a church of fifty people were meeting in their own building with a pastor installed to care for them. Despite the fact that it was all so obviously the work of the Lord, the voice of protest and antagonism from churches across the county was loud and clear. They insisted that they had wanted to start a church in that town! Why did I not evangelise in my own area? Why did I not ask their permission first? The fact is that with the purest motive I obeyed my Lord and He did the rest. The need is so great! The fields are white unto harvest! There is no time for suspicion and hostility. Let us rejoice, wherever the Gospel is preached. Don't persecute the few labourers there are! Pray for them! be lost and millions who could have been saved will perish.
