Walking on Water

John Hibbert

I was thinking about Simon Peter and the night he walked on water.  It was dark you know!  Somewhere between 3am and 6am!  It was also in the middle of a terrifying storm, not like some of the pictures we see of Peter walking on a calm lake.  Peter and his friends had been fighting the storm for at least six hours and now feared for their lives.  It was one of those times when human beings reach the point of exhaustion and have little or no fight left in them.  It seemed hopeless!

There was, however, one redeeming feature, one window of hope.  They were out on Lake Galilee because Jesus had sent them.  Whatever adversity we find ourselves in, the knowledge that we are in His will, has to give us hope.  How important it is to listen to His voice and obey Him at all times.

Of course, it could be argued that it was because the disciples had obeyed Jesus that they were in trouble.  If they had stayed on terra firma they would not be in this mess.  True!  But neither would Peter have had the opportunity to walk with Jesus in the miraculous.  Surely it is better to prove God in the storm than to stay safe in mediocrity?

I also realised that it was Peter’s idea to walk on the water.  It was his initiative and desire to join Jesus in a miracle, which caused him to exit the boat.  We will never experience a walk with God in the supernatural, unless we are prepared to step out of the natural.  We must have a vision to stand alongside our Lord in the impossible.  He will then be delighted to give us the word, “Come” as He did with Peter.

May your day be filled with vision and expectation which rises above the normal, transcends the boundaries of human thinking, and proves God in the unthinkable.
